After probably the calmest winter I’ve ever experienced, spring is upon us! Returning birds are making their way to city parks. The great horned owl chicks are growing into their own and should be fledging any week now. And the osprey are back and ready to breed:

Osprey build some of the most elaborate nests

An osprey perches on a pole in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge…

… turns its attention towards the photographer…

… voices its displeasure at being disturbed…

… launches itself from its perch…

… soars overhead…

… and eventually returns to its nest.

An eastern chipmunk takes a break at the base of a tree

A mourning dove peers over its shoulder while resting on a branch

An American tree sparrow poses on a vine of wineberry

A great horned owlet peeks out from its nest
Hey Andrew, cool pics. I took a bus from Jackson Heights to Jamaica Bay (the best way for me to get there from Astoria) and the bus driver was cool enough to slow down to point out the nest by the road and the ospreys hanging out on a tree across the street.
