So the red-tailed hawk pair nesting in the Unisphere is doing well. They certainly are spending enough time on and around the nest to imply that there are indeed eggs, but I could only field a guess as to how many the female laid. What I do know is that the eggs, if present, should be hatching within the next week or so. Hopefully I will get some shots of the young ones. For now you will have to settle with some captures of the male (I think) perched and eventually hunting within the Unisphere. It was stunning to see how unaffected he was by the 20 or so kids playing in the pool beneath the Unisphere. Although he didn’t catch anything, it was pretty amazing to watch him hop from section to section and scare pigeons out of every hiding place imaginable.

A European Starling harasses the hawk from a safe distance

The hawk ruffles it feathers to remove any dirt and dust

The male meets up with the female back at the nest

The male begins to stalk his prey…

… roaming the bottom of the Unisphere…

… flushing pigeons out…

… and scanning the area…

… only to eventually give up and continue his never-ending standoff with the pigeons.
