Animal Profile: Great Horned Owls of Alley Pond Park…

Owls are fascinating animals and probably some of the best hunters out there. Their vision is phenomenal, especially in the dark, but their hearing is even better. It’s fine-tuned to sense high-frequency sounds, like the squeaking of rodents or the rustling of leaves. Now while they cannot turn their head a full 360-degrees, they are able to move it as around as much as 270-degrees, so still quite impressive. And like most other birds of prey, they mate for life. One such mating pair of Great Horned Owls can be found in Alley Pond Park. Last month I posted some photos of one of the adult owls and the two owlets. They have since left the nest and are slowly learning the ins and outs of flying:
